Vientiane
October 17, 2008Hi there. We arrived in Vientiane, the capital of Laos last night, after a 10.5 hour bus ride. Was meant to be 8 hours. Was comfortable and air conditioned though, so was actually a good rest. Got to look at the lush green hills and dense tropical bush along the way. As well as brief flashes of road side village life. Most housing outside the towns we’ve been to is bamboo with thatch roof.
Our last couple of days in Luang Prabang were great, and ended with a bang as we were privileged enough to be there for the Rains retreat festival. It took part after dark, and consisted of a parade of replica boats for each village, lit by candles and carried by the boys, the girls and women would lead or follow in there traditional garments. Each village’s effort is judged I assume by local officials of some sort, and as such each group were trying to put on the biggest, brightest and loudest show possible. Fireworks, firebreathing, gongbashing, woohooing, dancing and the likes. A spectacle and a half to say the least.
Nothing beats pictures, so will put up some and some video soon.
